Outreach

Opportunities for Service and Outreach
We aim to serve Christ in all persons locally and globally. We place a special emphasis on assisting those in need in our local community through volunteer work and financial support of local homeless shelters and food programs. You are invited to join in these various ministries with your time, talent and gifts.

  • St. Peter’s Thrift Shop: Since 1955 the Thrift Shop has been a place where people can bring discarded clothing and other household items to be recycled. Today, approximately 20 women and men come out on Tuesdays to accept, sort, price and sell merchandise and offer friendship to one another and their customers. The Thrift Shop provides clothing at a modest cost to those with limited incomes. Clothing is freely given to victims of fires and other disasters and whatever isn’t sold is given away to the needy. The Thrift Shop is open every Tuesday (Sep. through June) from 10am-4pm.
  • InterFaith Hospitality Network (IHN) host site: St. Peter’s has provided a sanctuary for temporarily homeless families in the Interfaith Hospitality Network since 1996. St. Peter’s opens its doors to the families for one week in August, providing meals, a place to sleep and support for the families in the program.
  • Soup Kitchen: Providing lunch for the hungry four times a year to Christine’s Kitchen at Holy Trinity Church in W. Orange.
  • Food Barrel: Monthly collection of non-perishable food and other items for the Holy Trinity food pantry.
  • Knitting Ministry: Knitters meet at the rectory on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 7:00 to work on small or complex projects which are then donated to needy families, merchant marines, children or animals at local shelters.
  • Holiday Collections: Providing food baskets for the needy in the community for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • North Porch Women and Infants Center: Collecting new baby items (either with a “baby shower” or parish ingathering) for needy mothers and children who need emergency assistance.
  • Adopt a Family: Providing dinner, gifts and fellowship for a formerly homeless family during the Christmas season.
  • Caroling: Visiting and singing carols during the Christmas season to nursing home residents, soup kitchen patrons and shut-ins.
  • Children International: Supporting two “adopted” children in Nicaragua
  • Church World Service: Providing financial support.
  • Pajamas and Books: Collecting for needy children during the Martin Luther King Jr. day or service.
  • CROP WALK: Joining with the community to support this organization.
  • United Thank Offering (UTO): An ongoing program of offering thanks and making a small donation in a UTO collection box as a token of appreciation to God. Our offerings are collected and combined nationwide to make millions of dollars that supply worldwide grants for which others are able to give thanks.
  • Episcopal Relief and Development (ER&D): Providing financial support for their programs throughout the world.
  • Bread for the World Offering of Letters: Contacting legislators to advocate for hunger relief in the United States and abroad.

We invite anyone who wishes to join in any of these Outreach programs to call the church office at: 973-992-1932 or email us at info@stpetersliv.com. All volunteers are welcome.
